Few Women at the Wheel as Yango Seeks Gender Balance

Addressing the Gender Gap in Ride-Hailing

Despite a growing interest in ride-hailing as a source of income, there remains a noticeable lack of female drivers on Yango’s platform in Ghana. According to Bennet Otoo, the Public Relations Manager for Yango Africa, the company currently has “just over ten women drivers.” This number highlights a significant gender gap in an industry that is traditionally male-dominated.

Otoo spoke about this issue during a media stakeholder engagement in Accra, acknowledging the challenges women face in entering the driving profession. He noted that driving and delivery services are often seen as male roles, which can make it difficult for women to believe they have the capability to take on such jobs. However, he emphasized that Yango is actively working to address this imbalance.

To encourage more women to join, Yango has launched initiatives like the SHE Conference, which focuses on empowering women in the transport sector. The goal of this event is to inspire and motivate more women to become drivers and couriers on their platform. Additionally, Yango has organized events during International Women’s Day to raise awareness about the contributions of women in the transport sector and to encourage more women to join the platform.

The company also recognizes the importance of providing a safe and supportive environment for women. Otoo mentioned that Yango has intensified security features and regular training for both drivers and passengers. They are also exploring specific protections tailored for female drivers to ensure their safety and well-being.

Passenger preferences have also played a role in the need to engage more female drivers. Otoo stated that many people feel more comfortable with women drivers, making the recruitment of more women not only about encouragement but also about enhancing customer experience and satisfaction.

Yango has made it clear that the Ghana market is a priority for the company, despite its operations spanning more than 30 countries. The company is committed to encouraging more women to join their platform and contribute to the growth of the transport sector.

Expanding Beyond Ride-Hailing

During the media stakeholder engagement, Otoo explained that Yango is not just a ride-hailing platform but a global technology company. While ride-hailing is a major service in Ghana, Yango also offers delivery, cargo services, buying, selling, and NaviGATORing. This diverse range of services allows the company to cater to various needs and provide multiple opportunities for drivers and partners.

Otoo clarified that Yango does not work directly with drivers but instead collaborates with independent Small and Medium-sized Enterprises (SMEs). These partners own and manage the vehicles and are responsible for employing and empowering the drivers. This model ensures that drivers have a stable and supportive environment while also allowing for flexibility and independence.

By focusing on empowerment, safety, and diversity, Yango is striving to create a more inclusive and dynamic transport sector. Their efforts to increase female participation not only help bridge the gender gap but also enhance the overall customer experience. As the company continues to expand its services and reach, it remains committed to fostering a supportive and inclusive environment for all drivers, regardless of gender.
